Joseph Stella was born in Italy and immigrated to New York in 1896. He briefly attended medical school, but left in 1898 to study with William Merritt Chase at the New York School of Art and Shinnecock Summer School of Art.

He returned to Italy in 1909 and would continue traveling between Europe and the United States for the rest of his life. While in Italy, and later Paris, he was introduced to the concepts of Fauvism, Cubism and Futurism.

A decidedly modern artist, Stella worked in a variety of mediums and subjects. His works are in numerous prominent public collections, and most recently, is the subject of the exhibition “Joseph Stella: Visionary Nature” co-organized by the Brandywine Museum of Art and the High Museum of Art.
