Born in Syracuse, New York, Hamilton's family encouraged her art studies. She traveled and studied extensively throughout Europe and the United States. Her art was exhibited widely - from New York, Virginia, Washington, DC, the Bahamas, Paris, London, and beyond. By 1946, she was splitting her time mostly between Nassau in the summer and New York for the remainder of the year.
