Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Cut silhouette mounted on cream paper, signed and dated 1953, titled to mount, framed under glass.

Frame dimensions 7 1/4 x 9 in.

Dubbed "America's greatest silhouettist" by Carl Sandburg, Carew Rice expanded beyond the traditional craft by creating bold miniature landscapes and scenes in a difficult and precise medium. He cut his first silhouette in the 1930s and passed the tradition down to his grandson. In 2005, the South Carolina State Museum exhibited a collection of his work in celebration of the Rice family's 75th year of silhouette making.

Small spot of foxing to mount at lower left corner; not examined out of the frame.
