Likely of German birth, John Theodore Heins moved to the United Kingdom and settled in Norwich around 1720. He became a sought after portrait painter for the county and surrounding areas. His commissions include several mayors of Norwich; Samuel Bradford, Bishop of Rochester; Robert Walpole, Earl of Orford; Sir Jacob Astley; and a very fine family group portrait currently in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Allover craquelure; a few small paint flakes; obscuring varnish visible under UV light with evidence of retouch to sitter's hair; minor rubbing to frame.
