Chauncey Foster Ryder studied at the Chicago Art Institute, the Art Students League in New York and the Académie Julian in Paris. He was best known for his postimpressionist New England landscapes, which often incorporated a grayish-green known as “Ryder green.”

Ryder exhibited at the Paris salons, was elected an Academician at the National Academy of Design in 1914, and had numerous successful exhibitions at the prominent Macbeth Gallery in New York throughout his long career.
