Consalvo Carelli, who is sometimes also called “Gonsalvo,” was born and raised in Naples, Italy. Both he, his father and his brother were landscape painters in the “School of Posillipo,” a loose association of artists working in a realistic manner to produce Italian landscapes for wealthy travelers on their Grand Tours.

Carelli spent some time in Rome and in France, but eventually returned to Naples in the latter half of the 19th century. He and his family, all well known artists, maintained a studio at N. 13 Strada Bisignano. They advertised in numerous travelers’ guidebooks from the 1850s to 1880s.

Light surface grime; obscuring varnish visible under UV light with some evidence of retouch visible to left of center of composition, near sheep; some loss and chipping to frame.
