William Henry Singer, Jr. was encouraged to paint by his family, his father was a "Sunday painter" and his grandfather was a painter and gilder of chairs in Pennsylvania. In 1900, Singer traveled to Monhegan Island in Maine where he decided to devote his life to painting.

The following year, he and his new wife moved to Paris where he enrolled in the Académie Julian. They eventually settled in Norway, where Singer worked in a pointillist style to capture the dramatic and intimate landscapes of the fjord regions near Olden.
