Solon Francis Montecello Badger was born in Boston, Massachusetts. His father was a painter and he also lodged with the ship portrait painter William P. Stubbs. Badger’s paintings are in numerous collections including the Peabody Essex Museum, Maine Maritime Museum, and the National Maritime Museum of Greenwich in England.

The five-masted schooner, Nathaniel T. Palmer, was the largest sailing vessel in the world when she was launched in Bath, Maine in 1898. This schooner sailed up and down the coast of New England, carrying coal, until it was shipwrecked off the coast of New Jersey in 1901.
