Stapleton Kearns was born in 1952 in Rochester, Minnesota. He left high school early in order to more fully participate in the 1960s. After briefly studying at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design in 1970, Kearns left for Boston to pursue a more traditional style of painting. In Boston, he studied with R. H. Ives Gammell and Robert Douglas Hunter.

In 1983, Kearns moved to the historic art colony of Rockport, Massachusetts. He soaked up the methods and ides of the Cape Anne School of landscape painting. After a brief sojourn to New Hampshire, Kearns is once again living in Rockport. He is a member and past president of the Rockport Art Association and an elected member of the Guild of Boston Artists.
