Hunter Wood was born in the village of Babylon on Long Island in New York. His father, Worden George Wood, was a noted maritime painter and member of the US Naval Reserve during the Spanish-American War.

Hunter Wood entered the New York Merchant Marine Academy at the age of seventeen. After graduating, he sailed as quartermaster for several large shipping companies. His maritime paintings are highly regarded for his accuracy in details of rigging and proportions.
