Bela de Tirefort was born in 1894 in Eastern Europe and moved to New York in the 1930s. He drew inspiration from the muted tones of the earlier Ashcan School of painters, and began painting in his own style the iconic Manhattan locations such as Washington Square Park, the Flatiron Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the riverfront. De Tirefort’s cityscapes reflect a type of solitude and quiet observation of the city similar to artworks by Reginald Marsh and Edward Hopper.
