Préfète Duffaut is one of Haiti's best known painters. He said he was called to become an artist following an apparition of the Virgin Mary. She appeared to him in a dream, perched atop a sugarloaf mountain, and asked him to paint his town of Jacmel.

In 1948, Duffaut was introduced to Dewitt Peters and began studying at Le Centre d'Art d'Haiti. His paintings draw on both Catholicism and Voodoo mythology. His paintings have been exhibited internationally and have been collected by Jacqueline Lee Kennedy Onassis; the Milwaukee Art Museum; El Museo del Barrio, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
