Mary Shore, a painter and assemblage artist, was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and The Cooper Union in New York. In 1947, she and several other local artist transformed the traditional Gloucester Society of Arts into the Cape Ann Society of Modern Artists. Mary Shore was integral to the East Gloucester artist community. She scoured the beaches of Massachusetts with Louise Nevelson for assemblage pieces for their works. Two of Shore's paintings are in the collection of the Cape Ann Museum.
