Born in Bakou, Russia, Baussan began her art studies under private tutors. She later traveled to Paris to continue her studies. In Paris, she met the Haitian architect, Robert Baussan and moved with him to Haiti in 1931.

In 1944, she was one of the first women to join the Centre d'Art d'Haïti in Port-a-Prince. She exhibited frequently throughout her life. Although not a native Haitian, she was so influenced by Haitian culture that she considered herself a Haitian artist.
