Born in Colombia, Eduard Ramírez Villamizar spent a significant amount of time in Paris in the early to mid-1950s. Here he abandoned the figural and expressive style of his early work to develop the abstract and planar style that would characterize his mature oeuvre.

The present work dates to 1956, the same year as his one-person show at the Pan American Union in Washington, D.C. The Museum of Modern Art in New York has a gouache on paper from this same year in their collection. In 2022, The Modern Art Museum of Bogota mounted an exhibition, Colección en Escena 04: Ramírez antes de Villamizar, with the aim of exhibiting the artist's earliest work from this formative period.
