Born in Roanoke, Virginia, Maryann Harman earned her MFA from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1974. She was an art professor at her alma mater for 30 years. She had several solo shows of her work at such prominent galleries as Andre Emmerich Gallery, Meredith Long Gallery, and Theodore Haber Gallery in New York; Rubiner Gallery in Detroit; Wade Gallery in Los Angeles; and Osuna Gallery and Gallery K in Washington, D.C.

Paintings by Harman are in the public collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, North Carolina; and the Roanoke Museum, Virginia.
