Born in Scotland, Alan Gourley studied at the Glasgow School of Art and the Edinburgh College of Art. Between 1932 and 1937, he was an instructor at the Johannesburg Technical College in South Africa. Just before the outbreak of WWII, he traveled to Paris to continue his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1945, he moved to London, enrolling at the Slade School. He remained in England, but traveled widely throughout Spain, Italy, Morocco, Malta and Singapore.
