Born in Cheshire, England, Samuel John Lamora Birch was primarily a self-taught artist. He worked at various mill and office jobs, but would spend his free time painting. In 1889, he began visiting the artists' colony in Cornwall and Newlyn, where he met and was greatly influenced by Stanhope Forbes. This introduction to a more professional artistic environment encouraged Birch to travel to Paris for a year of study Atelier Colarossi.

In 1897, Birch returned to England and settled in St. Buryan, later Lamorna, near Penzance. Most of his works depict the brilliant Cornwall landscape. However, in addition to painting, fishing was another passion of his and combining the two as he traveled - through Scotland, Wales, Sweden, New Zealand and elsewhere - allowed Birch to see and paint a range of wild and beautiful landscapes.

Lamorna Birch exhibited widely, including 227 pictures at the Royal Academy, as well as regularly at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery and the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours.
