Early Engraved Powder Horn
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Dated 1759, carved horn with fancy engraving, wood plug incised DBK.

Length 14 in.

From the Estate of the late John Stephen McLachlin, Florida

Inscribed "Ensign JOHN LITCH / TIONDEROGA / Novemb'r ye 17th, 1759 / A DRAGON" alongside engraved images of a dragon, dog, bird, a sphinx-like creature and the engraved initials JL.
The date of 1759 and "TIONDEROGA" may be a reference to Fort Ticonderoga, a large 18th-century star fort, active during the French and Indian War, constructed between October 1755 and 1757, located near the south end of Lake Champlain, in northern New York.

Overall very good estate condition.
