Henry Thomas Dawson was born in Hull and lived in Nottingham until 1844, when he moved to Liverpool. He was primarily self-taught. He exhibited at the Liverpool Academy, where he was elected an associate in 1846 and a member in 1847. He also exhibited at the British Institute, Suffolk Street and Portland Gallery.
