This painting is a copy of a composition, circa 1703, by Adrian van der Werff now in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Van der Werff and his studio completed several examples of this composition, which was copied by the artist's brother and later painters.

Several air pockets between canvas and lining; paint loss and puncture to canvas in upper left quadrant; scattered retouch visible under UV light; later gold paint and some chipping to frame.
