Watercolor and whitening on paper, both signed; the larger, Redheads in Flight matted and presented under glass in an attractive maple frame (Frame dimensions 33 x 40 in.) (good estate condition, not examined out of the frame); the smaller, Mallards in Flight, matted and presented under glass in a gilt frame (Frame dimensions 27 x 30 1/2 in.) (fading and toning to sheet, not examined out of the frame).

Joseph Day Knap was originally from Scottdale, Pennsylvania and graduated from Columbia University in 1897. An avid sportsman, he began selling his watercolors of geese and ducks in 1924. In 1937, his design was used for the federal stamp for duck hunting licenses. He illustrated numerous magazines and his work was exhibited at Kennedy Galleries, Crossroads of Sport and Abercrombie & Fitch Co. in New York and Ackermann Galleries in London.
