Helen E. Coan was born in Byron, New York but grew up in Michigan. in 1883, she returned to New York, enrolling at the Art Students League and studying under William Merritt Chase and Frederick Freer. She moved to Los Angeles, California in 1887 and worked full time as a painter, furniture decorator and illustrator. She exhibited at the California Building, Worlds Columbian Exposition, Chicago; California State Fair, Sacramento; the San Francisco Art Association; Painters and Sculptors of Southern California, Los Angeles; Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, Seattle; and the Panama-California Exposition, San Diego.

Light surface grime; some mildewing to verso of canvas; minor rubbing to frame.
