Wilhelm Gail studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich before turning painting. In 1825, he traveled to Italy at the invitation of Baron von Malzen, the royal Bavarian chargé d'affaires at the Sardinian court. While in Italy, he completed numerous architectural renderings and genre scenes, many of which were published as lithographs.

Gail traveled extensively during his life and was among the first German artists of the 19th century to explore Spain.
