Artist Statement:
My mixed media work is a kind of visual synopsis of the black immigrant trying to stay true to the old self, while simultaneously giving the said self enough room to grow and evolve. My work examines the sometimes daunting task of negotiating a path between the brain and the mind, holding on to folklore, ancestral values while constantly adapting to a modern America built on ones and zeros. I work with a wide array of found objects and have come to the firm belief that objects have energy, and within that energy lives memory and language. I use these objects as portals into the ancestral realm and into the nostalgic subconscious.
