He was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant on November 1 and rose to the rank of Captain by May 25, 1864. Orr's regiment, originally with the Army of the Potomac, was transferred to the Army of the Cumberland under W. T. Sherman. The 107th New York was heavily involved in battles stretching from Georgia to the Carolinas during 1864 and 1865. Orr himself was seriously wounded on May 25, 1864 while engaged at New Hope Church during the Atlanta campaign.

Some residue from old cleaning in recesses; repair to split in scabbard about 10 in. above the drag; various dings; the blade somewhat worn with weakness to the devices; overall very good condition and highly desirable as a named presentation sword.
