After graduating from NC State’s College of Design, Abie won the Paris Prize in Architecture, a national award which enabled him to travel in Europe and study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He taught in the College of Design, co-founded the architectural firm Envirotek, and, for thirty-two years, helped plan the NC State University Main and Centennial campuses. He retired as University Architect Emeritus in 1998. He was named a fellow in the American Institute of Architects for his work in campus planning. His architectural drawings were donated to the D.H. Hill Library’s Special Collections. In 2014 Abie was awarded the NCAIA F. Carter Williams Gold Medal, Highest Award Given Annually to a NC Architect.

About ten years ago Abie shifted from sketchbook scale to larger, more focused drawing in pastels and acrylics. Recently, at the suggestion of NC Symphony violist David Marschall, he began drawing music, focusing on JS Bach’s Goldberg Variations. With David’s string trio, Quercus, they did several live performances in the Triangle area.

His drawings have been widely published, and are in private and corporate collections, and have been exhibited at NC State, Duke, Columbia, and Miami universities, and at the Raleigh Municipal Building, Cameron Village Library, Penland School of Crafts, Green Hill Center, Meymandi Hall, NC Natural History Museum, Home and Planet Gallery (Bethlehem, PA), and at Rebus Works Gallery. Now he is painting full-time in his studio gallery.

Good estate condition.
