James Harold Jennings (NC, 1930-1999), Crown
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
A popular art subject for Jennings who enjoyed wearing interesting head gear, the Crown is constructed of cut-out vinyl siding, polychrome painted, the upright feathers attached to a band having the favored sun, moon, star symbols applied at spaced intervals, signed on the interior headband along with celestial symbols.

7 x 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 in.

From the Collection of James Boyles and David Hawkins, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Jennings work is noticeable for its colorful and sometimes complex, painted dots as well as astral forms. One series of pieces featured women beating up men and was apparently inspired by reading about Celtic and Amazon women. When inspiration failed, Jennings resorted to a favorite trick of pressing his fingers against closed eyelids. Calling himself the “sun, moon and star artist,” he frequently incorporated these symbols within his work as well as included them with his signature.

Good condition.
