North Carolina Chippendale Large Painted Blanket Chest

Attributed to Eastern North Carolina, late 18th century, yellow pine dovetailed case, all over dark/black paint, two board top with bread board ends and applied edge molding, iron fish tail hinges, open interior, applied molded base with bold bracket feet, note triple distinctive drop to front and double drop to each side.

28.25 x 53.25 x 23.5 in.

These large forms also known as a 'Ticking Chest' since they generally held large pillows, mattresses and bedding. Rare to have a large chest of this example retaining the original skirt and feet.

Missing lock; front right foot with shrinkage crack; paint is old and likely original but appears to have areas of touch up; hole at escutcheon.
