William Alan Youngblood was born in Sweetwater, Tennessee. After serving as a nature artist and architectural draftsman from the National Park Service, he became art director at several ad agencies and corporations. In 1971, he became a full-time artist and a member of the American Watercolor Society, and signature member of the Georgia and Virginia Watercolor Societies. He lived in Powhatan, Virginia for many years and exhibited work extensively along the East Coast - from Washinton, D.C. to Charleston, South Carolina.

Muddy Creek Mill is a large Cumberland County, Virginia merchant mill. In 1792, the mill was raised and has remains standing as depicted in this watercolor. It operated until the 1960s and is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register, the National Historic Landmark and the National Register of Historic Places. This watercolor was featured on the cover of a 1978 edition of the "Robins Readers."
