Born in Morehead City, North Carolina, Helen grew up in Clarksville, Virginia. Her parents encouraged her pursuit of drawing, painting, music and theatre, which she studied at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. Helen was an avid supporter of women's education and pursued her interest in the arts her entire life. In 2004, the Asheville Art Museum, included work by Helen in their exhibition, Carolina Women Artists, 1850-2004.
