From the Estate of Martha Melvin, Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Born in Horsepasture, Virginia, Joseph Wallace King was raised in North Carolina. After living and studying in Washington, D.C., he returned to Winston-Salem to focus on his career as an artist. With the support of Charlie Babcock, husband to Mary Reynolds, heir to R. J. Reynolds, King was able to travel to Italy and France. He was also introduced to Victor Hammer, director of Hammer Galleries, who represented the artist for many years.
