Charles Muirhead was born in Liverpool in 1853. After working alongside his father as a fishmonger, he decided to pursue a career as a painter. He traveled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian from 1882-1885. Upon his return to England he settled in the fishing village of Polperro, Cornwall and later in St. Ives.

Muirhead exhibited at the Royal Academy and the St. Ives Art Club.
