B.J. Falk was a photographer active in New York City in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, known particularly for his cabinet cards picturing theatrical stars and other celebrities. This pastel is based on a photograph Falk took of Theodore Roosevelt in 1898. Though the artist is known known, it was likely completed close to the date of the photograph.

Canvas tear at right; some surface grime and spots; pastel needs fixative; some frame slipping.
