John Sitton was born in Forsyth, Georgia on January 9, 1907. He studied at Yale University, The Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Design in New York. In 1929, he was awarded the prestigious annual Rom Prize which allowed him to study at the American Academy in Rome.

Sitton is best known for his WPA era murals, including ones at the Clifton, New Jersey post office, the board room of the Federal Reserve Building in Atlanta, Georgia and the Riverside Memorial Chapel in New York. He was also commissioned to paint a mural for the World's Fair of 1940, titled The Genius of Progress.
