Included with the painting is a copy of Masterfully Human: The Art of Gaugengigl, published to accompany the exhibition at the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum in 2018.

Born in Germany, Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl studied at he Royal Academy in Munich. After continuing his studies in Italy and Paris, he emigrated to the United States in 1878. He settled in Boston and became a sought after portraitist and teacher, including Childe Hassam as one of his students.

Gaugengigl is best known for his small-scale genre paintings and interiors incorporating figures in 18th and 19th century dress. His paintings are in the collections of the Boston Athenæum; the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; and the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Good estate condition; not examined out of the frame.
