Born in Bremen, Germany, Hermann Herzog studied at the Dusseldorf Academy and quickly established a reputation in Europe, with Queen Victoria among his many collectors. He emigrated to the United States in his late 20s, settled in Philadelphia, and traveled widely around the country and to Mexico, painting landscapes until his death in 1932.

His works have been exhibited in the Centennial Exposition (Philadelphia), 1876, Ferargil Gallery (NYC), 1931, Oakland Museum, Bancroft Library (UC Berkeley), The Philadelphia Museum, The Crocker Museum (Sacramento), The Cincinnati Museum, Reading Pennsylvania Museum, and the New York Public Library.

Several areas of flaking and varnish loss, heavy craquelure throughout, paint is unstable in some areas.
