Born on an Indian reservation in Oklahoma in 1898, John "Jock" Minnich Wilson was a coal miner who became a prominent poet, author, artist, surveyor, and civil engineer. He worked in various mining camps from the age of 13 near Terre Haute, Indiana. As a young man, he served in both World Wars in the U.S. Marines. He received awards for his works of literature and poetry including the Avery Hopwood Major Award for his autobiographical novel. Wilson painted throughout his life, attending both the Detroit School of Fine Arts and the Haywood Academy of Fine Arts.
