Dublin-born artist John Faulker studied drawing and painting at the Royal Dublin Society School, leading him to an exhibition at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1852, when he was only 17 years old. He became an elected RHA academician at the age of 26, and exhibited a the Royal Academy in London. He was well known for his soft watercolor paintings of Irish and Scottish landscapes, though he painted in oils as well.

In 1870 he left for America after being removed from the Academy for a period of time. He later settled in London and continued exhibiting in the RHA in 1880 until 1887. Today, his works can be found in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland among other public collections in Ireland and the UK.
