Stanley Royle was born in Lancashire, England, but spent much of his career in the Canadian maritime provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. He studied at the Sheffield Technical School of Art from 1904 to 1910. After graduating, he worked as an illustrator before beginning a career as a painter. He moved overseas and worked at the Novia Scotial College of Art in Halifax until 1934, and was the Director of Owens Art Museum and Professor of Drawing and Painting at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick until 1945, developing the first Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree available in Canada.

Royle was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, The Royal West of England Academy, the Sheffield Print Club, the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, The Royal Society of Arts, and the Sheffield Society of Artists. His works have been exhibited in the Royal Academy, the Walker Art Gallery, The National Academy of Design, The Soceité Des Artists Francais, and the Tate.
