Mischa Askenazy was born near Odesa, Russia, in 1888. At the age of four, he and his family moved to New York City. Askenazy studied at the National Academy of Design and then spent two years in continuing his artistic education and practice in France and Italy. In 1925, Askenazy accepted a portrait commission which took him to Montecito, California. He fell in love with Southern California and ultimately settled in Los Angeles.

Askenazy exhibited at the Pasadena Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, the Hollywood Woman's Club, California Art Club, De Young Museum, the Oakland Museum, and many others.
