Johannes Adam Simon Oertel was an artist and Episcopal clergyman. Born in Bavaria, he moved to the United States in 1849. He spent his career moving around the country, but spent several years as the priest of St. James Episcopal Church in Lenoir, North Carolina.

Oertel painted the decorations for the ceiling of the House of Representatives in the Capitol in Washington, D.C.; the painting, Rock of Ages, which was widely circulated and available as reproduction; a series of four paintings of The Plan of Redemption, now in the collection of the University of the South; as well as carvings and paintings in numerous churches along the East Coast and Midwest.
