Gerald Sargent Foster was an avid yachtsman and artist. His paintings of schooners and yacht races are detailed to a sailor's eye, but artistically composed to capture the viewer's interest. Born in New Jersey, Foster later moved his home and studio to Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Foster studied at the American Academy in Rome, Princeton University, the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York. He completed murals for the post offices in Freehold, New Jersey and Poughkeepsie, New York as part of FDR's Works Projects Administration (WPA).

Foster exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Macbeth Gallery in New York, and the Whitney Museum of Art. His paintings and etchings are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.

Some minor abrasion in the upper sky area, otherwise good estate condition.
