Hardcover with green cloth inset illustrated boards and gilt lettering. 8vo; xiv, 547pp. with appendix; xvi, 540pp. with index. Both with frontispiece, (1) large folded map in rear pocket, and numerous full-page and smaller illustrations.

First title, both volumes with boards detached from text block, wear to boards including some loss to cloth, titles still clear; free endpapers partially or fully detached, owner's name and two book plates, interior with scattered foxing and toning, rear pocket of Vol. I empty. Second title with scuffing to boards, corners and spines worn with tears and minor loss to cloth, some separation at spine from text block; marks and wear to endpapers with some loss, cracking and separation at hinges (esp. Vol. II), pages toned, foxing, offsetting. Vol. II missing second folding map; maps with foxing, tears at folds, one with offsetting. While the first title is fragile, the second title is quite sturdy.
