Arthur Grove Robinson was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina. He took classes at Black Mountain College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before earning his bachelor's and master's degrees from Columbia University in New York. He studied in Paris as a Fulbright Scholar from 1958 to 1959. Upon his return to the States he taught at Meredith College in Raleigh and served as chairman of the arts department at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee.
