Lloyd Schermer (American, b.1927), Block Stamp Sculpture
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
2005, comprised of various carved wood and metal block stamps assembled in a pyramidal form, signed at edge.

18 x 18 x 9 in.

From the Estate of the late William Hodding Carter III, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Lloyd Schermer began his artistic career later in life, attending the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, CO. He had previously worked in the newspaper business and was inspired by the 15th-century style of printing invented by Johann Gutenberg, of casting individual reusable letters that could be set into a frame for printing. As the newspapers converted into modern methods of typesetting, these metal and wood block types were rendered obsolete and disposed of. Schermer repurposed these discarded materials to create one-of-a-kind works of art.

Some blocks are loose and have been re-glued.
