William Pierce Stubbs was born in Maine, with a shipbuilder as his father. By 1876, he was living in Boston, Massachusetts and listed as a marine painter in the city directory. His ship portraits are in the collection of the Bostonian Society, Cape Ann Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum.

Some surface grime and age cracking, a few scattered fleabite, and pinhole losses; one barely visible hole to upper right corner; area of near separation to canvas at upper ledt corner; one patched hole en verso with associated retouching; some areas of stabilization to verso without visible associated retouching to canvas.
