Springfield, Massachusetts, .58 caliber, 40 in. round barrel with a two-leaf raised sight, V, P and eagle head proofs at breech, dated 1859 on flat to left of the percussion cap nipple; walnut stock with brass Enfield-style nose cap, otherwise mounts are iron; an illegible inspector's cartouche is present on the stock's left behind the side plate's rear screw; the lockplate stamped with U.S. SPRINGFIELD before the tape primer compartment and dated 1859 at the rear; US placed on butt plate tang. Bayonet present and marked US / F.
Overall length (without bayonet) 55-1/2 in.
Private North Carolina Collection Pleasing bright metal surfaces throughout with some minor oxidation; the stock with very few dings or other distractions; a few punch marks to the lockplate. Overall very good to fine condition.
