Likely Bullet Struck Model 1861 U.S. Springfield Rifle-Musket
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
.58 caliber, 40 in. round barrel with raised site to rear, V/P/eagle head at breech; walnut stock with iron mounts; the lockplate with an eagle over U.S. / SPRINGFIELD before the hammer and dated 1862 behind the hammer; possible worn inspector's cartouche to rear of upper screw on the left side of stock; US stamped on butt plate tang; sling swivels present.

Private North Carolina Collection

The right side of the butt has a worn groove that appears to have been made by an inbound minie ball. The wear patterns are the right shape and are visibly quite old. A standard .58 caliber round was most likely responsible for this damage, however various bullets between .54 and .69 caliber were also fitted to the groove and cannot be ruled out entirely.

Working action; trigger guard lacks front attachment screw; pleasing surfaces throughout; good condition.
