Sam Middleton was born in New York City in the 1920's, and grew up in Harlem. Jazz and classical music themes became important inspirations throughout his artistic career. Middleton primarily worked with mixed media, and particularly collage. He developed a personal style in the language of abstract expressionism, often basing his color, line, and compositions on sound and harmony.

This work embodies the artist's unique style from the mid-1980s and early 1990s, while working in the Netherlands. He was inspired by classical music during this period, and created series of works dedicated to various composers.
